Canadians are especially known for saying sorry, even when there’s nothing to apologize for! But word choice can have a lot of influence over our feelings, so here’s a suggestion to turn the negative into a positive: Replace “I’m sorry” with “Thank you”. Instead of “sorry I’m late”, try “thank you for waiting for me”. When your boss points out a mistake, instead of “sorry about that”, respond with “thank you for telling me, that’s helpful.” And when you have to pass someone in a crowd, don’t say “sorry”, it’s “excuse me”. When “sorry” no longer becomes the default sentence starter, you may just feel more relieved and more empowered. Try it!
