What a way to come through for your hometown! The Weeknd recently donated $500,000 to the Scarborough Health Network (SHN).  The Weeknd says in a press release, “I was raised in  Scarborough and felt it was important to give back to the community that raised me during the hard times of this pandemic.”

Abel’s donation to the SHN comes from the proceeds from his XO-branded face masks.  Back in April, The Weeknd launched his cloth face masks that went for $20/each.  He announced on Instagram, “XO face masks are back to raise money and I’ll be matching every dollar that comes in to aid communities afflicted by COVID-19 with 100% of the proceeds going to Musicares.”  He has since kept that promise.

According to the Scarborough foundation, Able’s donation will be used to purchase vital signs and ECG monitors, ventilators, health and wellness supports for frontline workers and personal protective equipment.  Elizabeth Buller, SHN president and CEO shares, “Our vibrant and diverse community represents the best of Canada, and we are fortunate to have ambassadors like The Weeknd in our corner.  This gift will help our community hospitals continue to deliver exceptional care for the people of Scarborough in the wake of COVID-19, and demonstrates to our courageous staff and physicians that their critical work does not go unnoticed or unappreciated.”
