Hellooo my Picassos and Picasettes! Welcome to Week Six of The Great Abjuration. I spent the weekend in deep contemplation, renewing my inner resources and girding myself for the challenges ahead. Which is to say I read, worked out, ate my weight in food, and drank like there was a war on. It’s not how much I drank, it’s what. I had not one but two martinis Friday night, forgetting that I stopped doing that a long time ago, because as much as I love gin, gin does not love me back, and when I woke up Saturday morning, gin actually punched me in the head then ran off laughing, so to hell with you, gin. We are done here.

Earlier that day, much earlier, I asked you to show me your crafts: your creations, your hobbies, your pastimes, the things that you are doing to help you through the Time of the COVID-19, and you responded in droves. I am so impressed. As promised, I am featuring some of these efforts today, and will continue to do so as long as you keep sending them. If yours isn’t here, it’s coming.

Let’s start with Carolyn, who was stuck in Panama at the beginning of the pandemic (poetic). When finally got home, she recreated her view of the mountains using what art supplies she had on hand:

Carolyn says “the mountain really looks like yogi bear lying down and the trees look like they’re from a Doctor Zeus book”. I think it’s stunning.

Abhi makes beautiful necklaces:

Gorgeous

Diane is amazing. She is into fashion, has a stash of fabric on hand, and is making masks. Look at these babies:

Makes you actually want to wear one, doesn’t it?

Lucy. Well, what does Lucy NOT do? She tells me she’s been baking, crocheting, making curtains, with photos to prove it. Here’s a floral headpiece she made for her granddaughter for her son’s wedding, which unfortunately had to be postponed:

Hey Lucy! Beautiful! I love Lucy.

Jennifer is a photographer, but as she can’t get out to shoot like she used to, she’s taken to digitally painting existing photos.

Incredible!

Then there’s Carolyn, who has collected hundreds of pins on her travels, and didn’t know what to do with them until she fashioned them together to make an installation on her wall:

Slow applause.

Katherine, my son’s girlfriend and our roommate, is the most accomplished young woman I’ve ever met. She took an old T-shirt and my sewing basket and did this in an hour on Saturday, freehand.

Kath also cuts hair, cooks, reads, plays varsity field hockey, and has a beautiful singing voice. If Ronan doesn’t keep her, I will.

So that’s just a sampling of what we are doing in the shadows. I’ve saved some for later, so stay tuned. If you’re looking for inspiration, take a page from Danielle, who apparently decided to answer the Getty Art Challenge with her version of “Girl with a Pearl Earring”

Yes, the pearl earring IS a garlic clove. No, YOU shut up.

I send you my best. Now you send me yours.
