In a brand new interview with The Guardian, Shawn Mendes is once again, opening up about his sexuality and is addressing the online rumours that have been circulating about him.

Shawn begins with, “For me it’s hurtful.  I get mad when people assume things about me because I imagine the people who don’t have the support system I have and how that must affect them.”

Shawn explains to The Guardian not only do the rumours hurt him but they also affect his fans that are part of the LGBTQ community.  In late 2017, Shawn posted on Snapchat, “First of all, I’m not gay.  Second of all, it shouldn’t make a difference if I was or wasn’t.”  Back to The Guardian, Shawn explained to the magazine, “That was why I was so angry, and you can see I still get riled up, because I don’t think people understand that when you come at me about something that’s stupid you hurt so many other people. They might not be speaking, but they’re listening.”

This isn’t the first time Shawn has had to address his sexuality.  Last year, Shawn was on the cover of Rolling Stone and as the magazine wrote, “Examples of what he means are all over YouTube and Twitter. There are memes that pair photos of Mendes with jokes about being closeted and videos that scrutinize his gestures. On some parts of the Internet, outing him has become a spectator sport. Mendes often finds himself watching his own interviews, analyzing his voice and his body language. He’ll see an anonymous stranger comment on the way he crossed his legs once and try not to do it again. He pulls out his phone to show me his Twitter account — his name is the only recent search. “In the back of my heart, I feel like I need to go be seen with someone — like a girl — in public, to prove to people that I’m not gay,” he says. “Even though in my heart I know that it’s not a bad thing. There’s still a piece of me that thinks that. And I hate that side of me.””

My question is, why can’t we just focus on the music and Shawn’s beautiful voice?
