For more than 100 years Sweethearts have helped us express our romantic side. The little heart candy with the ‘sweet message’ appeared in Anne Of Green Gables, published in 1908, when Gilbert presents Anne with a pink candy heart that says “You Are Sweet” which Anne promptly grinds with her shoe heel.  Sweethearts also made an appearance in a Simpson’s episode that had Bart writing his own messages on the little hearts.

The reason Sweethearts will not be missing from candy shelves this year is Necco, the candy’s original producer, went out of business last year and Spangler Candy Company, which bought Necco, wasn’t able to begin production in it’s factory to have the candy available for 2019 Valentine’s Day.  They do assure us Sweethearts will be on shelves in 2020.
