Ryan Reynolds made a very special fan’s dream come true this week with a surprise phone call. The Canadian actor, who is busy filming Deadpool 2 in Vancouver, hopped on FaceTime to chat with five-year-old fan Daniel Downing, who is terminally ill with cancer.

Ryan recently learned that Daniel was diagnosed with a brain tumour and in hopes of cheering him up, arranged a call with his mother Stephanie. “Daniel picked up the phone and Ryan asked if he knew who he was,” she recalled to the Plymouth Herald, adding that her son was very excited to hear the actor’s voice. “As soon as Daniel realized, he asked if he could FaceTime him and then he was very, very hyper,” she explained.

Ryan didn’t just chat with the youngster, he gave him a behind-the-scenes look at the set of his movie. “All the camera crew waved hello and Daniel had his Mr Pool t-shirt on (like the Mr Men but for Deadpool). He was telling Ryan how poorly he’d been and how his friends had helped him feel better,” Stephanie revealed.

Daniel’s mom was so “grateful” that Ryan made the call and admitted how their short conversation really lifted up her son’s spirits. “He was so excited! He told all his friends and his teachers. It’s nice to see him so excited because he has been a bit down lately,” she said.

This isn’t the first time that Ryan made a young cancer patient’s day. The Canadian heartthrob surprised 13-year-old Connor McGrath with a private screening of his soon-to-be released film Deadpool back in February 2016. The two formed a close friendship before Connor’s untimely passing last April and the actor went on to dedicate his 2016 Critics’ Choice Award to his late friend.
