I hope you had a great Family Day. Let me introduce you to mine. The little family, as we call it, meaning the immediate, nuclear combination of my husband, our offspring, and me. I’ll save the extended family for when we’ve all had a stiff drink.

The husband is John. He’s a very, very nice guy, I think. Much nicer than me, if by nice we mean patient, tolerant, kind and thoughtful. He’s officially handsome. In fact, the first time I set eyes on him, he was on a calendar. The University of Toronto Men on Campus calendar circa 1982. He was Mr. September, and that makes me Mrs. September. He’s a civil engineer, which means he’s polite and can build things. And he’s a great father, as witnessed by a card Aidan once gave us which read, “Dad, you’re the best, and Mom too.”

Aidan is our eldest son. He’s almost 24, which I find hard to believe, but I was there when he was born, so it must be true. He’s also very handsome, and funny, and accomplished and sporty. He works in commercial real estate, and lives at home because I won’t let him move out. We renovated our basement, so he has his own space down there, and pops up for meals and such. He has a lovely girlfriend named Jamie, and we hang out from time to time, go out for brunch, watch TV, play cards, almost like normal people do.

Ronan is our youngest. He’s 18, and he’s away at school in England, in his first year at the University of Bristol. It will probably also be his last year there, as he plans to transfer to U of T. There’s a whole back story there, but we’ll save that for another day. Ronan is another handsome devil (what can I say? They come out that way.) He’s the dreamy musical intellectual one. Ro also has a beautiful girlfriend, who is also away at school, but in the U.S., so he writes and sings songs about her and heartbreak and loss, even when she’s in the same room.

So that’s my little family. I love them beyond belief. If I do nothing else with my life, I did this.
